Car insurance provides coverage for property damage and bodily injuries caused to third parties in traffic accidents, guaranteeing their compensation.

It is mandatory for all vehicles registered in Spain or subject to registration in Spain.
Without this insurance, vehicles cannot legally circulate on public roads.

Comprehensive or Extended Third-Party Insurance is an optional policy that covers the mandatory civil liability required by law, extended with additional protections. Comprehensive insurance becomes mandatory for vehicles acquired through leasing.

A valid Car Insurance Policy includes the specific conditions identifying the insured vehicle, the general terms and conditions, and the international insurance certificate known as the “Green Card.”

All car insurance policies are registered in the FIVA database (Computerized Register of Insured Vehicles).

The cost of car insurance policies is determined by insurers based on factors such as engine capacity, accident history, the driver’s age and driving experience, among others.

The bonus-malus system, which reflects the claims history, plays a key role in calculating the premium.

Bonus (Discount):

Policyholders with no recordable claims during the insurance year receive a bonus, that is, a reduction in the premium for the following period as they move down the scale. With each claim-free year, the bonus level increases and the discount can reach up to 50%.

Surcharge (Malus):

If policyholders have recordable claims, they will receive a penalty, that is, an increase in the insurance premium for the following period. With each registered claim, the level on the scale rises and the insurance premium may increase significantly.

Transferability:

The Bonus-Malus scale is linked to the vehicle and its owner. In the event of a vehicle change, the level reached on the Bonus-Malus scale is transferred to the new Motor Liability policy for the same owner.

Applicability:

This scale applies to vehicles owned by both natural persons and legal entities, without distinction.

In the event of a claim

You must notify the insurer and/or us and follow the instructions provided regarding repair shop requests and the appraisal procedure.

  • Whenever an accident occurs involving injured or deceased persons, call the emergency number 112 to notify the traffic authorities.

  • If you are the only party involved or if more than two vehicles are involved, contact the police to report the accident.

  • If the accident involves two vehicles, you must complete the European Accident Statement (or Friendly Accident Report) and send it to the insurer.

  • All details of the vehicles, the damage caused (to both persons and vehicles), as well as the circumstances of the accident, must be included.

  • If there are witnesses, obtain their contact details.

  • It is important for those affected by a traffic accident (both victims and their families) to know that they are entitled to a range of social, economic, and public benefits. They can access these either through their Primary Health Care Center, by prior appointment, or by visiting the Social Security Care and Information Centers.

  • Claims must be submitted to the insurer of the party responsible for the accident, or to the Insurance Compensation Consortium in cases where the liable party cannot be identified, or if the vehicle was stolen or uninsured.

*These tips are in line with those provided by the Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT).
